A Post-War Suburban Dream 🏡
The story of Town ‘n’ Country is the story of the American dream in the 1950s. After World War II, with GIs returning and the middle class growing, there was a massive demand for affordable single-family homes. In 1956, a development company called Laury-Ann purchased a huge tract of what was then just pine flatwoods and cattle pasture, located miles west of the Tampa city limits.
Their vision was to build a community of sturdy, affordable, concrete-block homes for young families. To sell this vision, they created a brilliant marketing slogan that became the community’s name: Town ‘n’ Country. The name was designed to evoke the perfect blend of modern convenience (the “Town”) with the peace, quiet, and open space of a more rural lifestyle (the “Country”).
The concept was an overwhelming success. The community grew at a breathtaking pace through the 1960s and ’70s, with its main arteries, Hillsborough Avenue and Waters Avenue, developing into major commercial corridors. It was, for a time, the quintessential, homogenous American suburb.
A Vibrant Cultural Crossroads 🌎
The most important story about modern Town ‘n’ Country is its transformation into a cultural crossroads. Beginning in the 1980s and accelerating ever since, the area became a major gateway for immigrants and new residents, particularly from Latin America. Its affordable housing stock and central location made it an ideal landing spot.
Today, Town ‘n’ Country is arguably the heart of Hillsborough County’s vibrant Hispanic community. You can see and feel this everywhere—from the bustling Colombian bakeries and Cuban cafeterias that line its main roads to the Spanish-language signs in its shopping centers. It has become a true melting pot, with a rich blend of cultures, especially from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic, living alongside the families who have been there for generations.
Like its neighbors, Town ‘n’ Country remains a large unincorporated community, with all government services provided by Hillsborough County. Its identity, however, is forged by the diverse communities that call it home.
